Now a growing & important research field, crisis management—as a formal area of study—is relatively young, having just emerged since the late 1980s following a succession of such calamities as the Bhopal gas leak, the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, & the financial crises of 2008. The analysis of the organizational failures that caused events such as these helped drive the emerging field of crisis management. Simultaneously, the number of natural disasters has increased as well. From this, we have learned that our modern, tightly interconnected & interdependent society is simply more vulnerable to disruption than in the past.
This interconnectedness is made possible in part by crisis management, while also increasing our reliance on it. As such, crisis management is as beneficial & crucial today as information technology has become over the last few decades. Successfully engaging, dealing with, & working through a crisis require an understanding of options & tools for individual & joint decision-making. The Encyclopedia of Crisis Management comprehensively explains concepts & techniques for effectively assessing, analyzing, managing, & resolving crises, whether they be organizational, business, community, or political. From general theories & concepts exploring the meaning & causes of crisis to practical strategies & techniques relevant to crises of specific types & categories, crisis management will be thoroughly introduced & explored in approximately 375 articles.
This comprehensive project will be published by SAGE Reference & will be marketed to academic & public libraries as a print & digital product available to students via the library’s electronic services. The General Editors, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, are K. Bradley Penuel, Matt Statler, & Ryan Hagen at New York University.
We are currently making assignment with a deadline of March 19, 2012.
